The ICLA is proud to present its Inaugural Seminar, “International Construction Law: Bringing Common and Civil Law, is standardisation possible?” to be held on 24 June 2016 in Paris, France. The ICLA was initiated by Dr. Wolfgang Breyer (Chairman) in May 2015 by bringing together leading lawyers, barristers, construction professionals, judges and academics from around the globe specialising in International Construction Law. The aim of the ICLA is to bridge the gap between the Civil and Common law by informing and debating on Construction Law issues.

The ICLA Inaugural Seminar will provide an overview of the different jurisdictions of law from around the globe, in particular the Common and Civil law, and how popular Construction Law issues are handled under these jurisdictions.

Event Schedule

The morning session will start with giving the “big picture” where experts in Construction Law will examine the different jurisdictions of law and their history, how they are related and what are the key principles and differences between the Civil and Common Law. For the afternoon session expert speakers will focus on Construction Law issues found in every jurisdiction such as delayed damages, limitations of liability and defects liability and how the different families of law handle some of these issues.

    Workshops on different Common laws and Civil codes around the world and Construction Law issues. Each workshop will shed light on the following topics in the context of its jurisdictions of law - Attendees are allowed to change between workshops according to interest or relevance of family of law being presented.Two of the afternoon Workshop sessions will be held next to the morning session hall.

    • 1:30pm - 2:00pm Choose between workshops on English Common law or German Civil law or Napoleonic Civil law. Workshops include an overview of construction law in legal family - standard contracts, local standards, etc.
    • 2:00pm - 2:30pm Choose between workshops on Chinese Civil law or North American Common law or Russian Civil law. Workshops include an overview of construction law in legal family - standard contracts, local standards, etc.
    • 2:30pm - 3:00pm Choose between workshops on Nordic law or GCC Civil law or South American Civil law. Workshops include an overview of construction law in legal family - standard contracts, local standards, etc.
